The cleanup along Florida’s West Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian is just getting started, and yet the scope of devastation already seems unimaginable. Officials from the insurance industry and local governments said it could be the costliest storm on record, with an anticipated price tag already exceeding $50 billion.

Ken Kelly, president of Kelly Roofing, RC’s 2019 Residential Contractor of the Year based in Bonita Springs, took a quick break from the response to update roofers on the situation on the ground.

Kelly also shared some key tips from his company’s storm preparation in advance of Ian’s wrath, and discussed how the lessons learned from Hurricane Irma in 2017 positioned the company to thrive through the crisis.

“It was real turning point for us because we went from being a retail roofer shifting into the insurance world,” he said. “We said, ‘Why not play in that world, when we have the opportunity right here in our backyard?’”
