IKO, the Toronto-based manufacturer of roofing, waterproofing and insulation products, announced on Monday that it has joined the Canada Green Building Council.
In a Dec. 9 news release, IKO said the association aligns with its commitment to advancing sustainability initiatives as the company approaches 2025.
The company appointed Darren Rafter as its director of Sustainability earlier this year, strengthening its drive toward impactful sustainability initiatives. As part of CAGBC, IKO will collaborate with a nationwide network that promotes green building practices and reduces carbon emissions in line with the industry’s best practices.
“Joining the Canada Green Building Council is a natural next step in our sustainability journey,” Rafter said. “This association will help us engage more deeply with the green building community and explore new opportunities to innovate while contributing to a sustainable future for our industry.”
As a CAGBC corporate member, IKO said it gains access to valuable industry resources, including green building education, advocacy initiatives, and insights from CAGBC’s market research.
As part of its ongoing sustainability efforts, IKO said it has made “considerable progress” on key projects at its plants, primarily the commissioning of its Recycled Asphalt Shingle Line at its plant in Hawkesbury, Ontario.
Additionally, IKO's multiple partnerships with asphalt shingle waste recyclers enable it to supply manufacturing waste asphalt shingles from facilities across North America, diverting materials that would otherwise end up in landfills.
In September, the company also commissioned its third rooftop solar installation at its Hagerstown, Md., facility.
Looking ahead to 2025, IKO hopes to expand its sustainability projects, including new waste reduction and energy efficiency developments. The company will also continue to build strong relationships with industry leaders and stakeholders through its engagement with the CAGBC.
