Best of Best of Success: Cotney Explores Changes for Subcontractors in Roofing

Trent Cotney BOS 2019

Roofing Contractor concluded its Best of Best of Success webinar series with a presentation on a subject resonating with roofers across the country — subcontractors.  Recent changes in how the federal government defines independent contractors, coupled with new priorities anticipated from a Biden administration, make it an interesting time for subcontractors, said Trent Cotney, CEO of Cotney Construction Law.

Unable to host the 16th annual Best of Success conference as planned in Dallas due to the COVID-19 pandemic, RC invited Cotney, the attorney for several roofing contractor associations and organizations, to break down recent changes to the law and give a glimpse of what contractors can expect in 2021. He estimated that 70% of residential roofing contractors currently use subs, and about 40% of commercials do the same.

“The use of subcontractors is increasing,” Cotney said, noting that the roofing industry’s workforce crunch was only exacerbated by COVID-19. “It’s critical for roofing contractors to know what they have to do to protect themselves and their business partners.”
