David Klein
CEO
Greenwood Industries
David Klein, a 1993 Syracuse University graduate, founded Greenwood Industries in 1992. Initially established as a residential roofing company, Greenwood Industries pivoted to a purely commercial focus, quickly rising to prominence. Under David's leadership, the company was recognized as Roofing Contractor of the Year in 2023 and is ranked among the nation's top roofing contractors by Roofing Contractor Magazine in 2024.
David's strategic vision has been instrumental in Greenwood Industries' growth. Recognizing a trend of clients seeking holistic partners, he redefined the company as a Custom Building Envelope Solutions provider. In 2016, he established GRS, a professional service and maintenance division, to build and maintain customer relationships, shifting its focus from roofing to comprehensive building envelope maintenance. In addition, David invested in key acquisitions include The Waterproofing Company, a pioneering waterproofing contractor, and Phoenix Bay State Construction, Inc., a leading masonry contractor in Boston. Greenwood has expanded its reach from New York to Maine through these acquisitions and new office openings.
David's foresight extended to navigating the supply chain crisis, where he transitioned from a just-in-time stocking philosophy to aggressive material purchasing and expanded warehousing. He also established a safety-first culture at Greenwood, making significant investments in safety rails and software and employing the largest safety department among similar contractors in the region. David is known for his personal commitment to enhancing safety for employees, customers, and the public.
David's leadership and achievements have earned him several individual accolades, including the WBJ Large Business Leader of the Year 2023, the 'CUSE50 Entrepreneur Award, and recognition as a Worcester Educational Development Foundation Distinguished Alumni. Greenwood Industries and its projects have also received numerous awards, such as Roofing Contractor of the Year 2023, Highwire's 2024 Platinum Safety Award, the North American Copper in Architecture 2024 Award for the New York State Capitol, the Low Slope Sustainability Project of the Year 2022 for Boston University's Center for Computing and Data Sciences, the 2022 Rhode Island AIA Design Award for Historical Preservation and Faith & Forms Best Religious Architecture Restoration Award for the restoration of the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence, RI, and NERCA’s Gold Circle Platinum Award for the Massachusetts State Capital.
Known for his loyalty to employees, David takes pride in not engaging in layoffs during the COVID-19 pandemic. He is also committed to philanthropy, serving as a sponsor, member, and contributor to the New England Center for Children. In 2021, he and his wife, Elizabeth, established the George Klein Endowed Scholarship at Syracuse University.
