Safety is paramount in all roofing, but especially in large commercial projects like the new Wellness Center at Montana State University. So what should roofing contractors do to ensure their crews get home safely?
To find the answers, RC headed to Bozeman, Mont. to meet up with Tammy Clark, owner of Tammy K. Clark companies and certified safety consultant, as she worked on site at the Wellness Center.
Clark is joined by Samuel Brokenshire, chief business development officer with ACE Roofing, an Omnia Exterior Solutions company, to discuss remaining safe during commercial jobs.
“I've been here on this project a couple of times over the past year, year and a half. And even though we're just doing repairs right now, it's still really important to keep an eye on the safety and compliance of these projects because we're still here up on a roof several stories high,” she said.
For instance, Clark says workers need to remain alert about egress, access points and any potential holes in the roof that could lead to fall hazard exposure. She provides solutions for some of these common hazards, most of which focus on fall safety since it is the most fatal hazard in roofing.
“Even if it's just a quick one- or two-day job, repair job, these are the things you have to keep an eye on,” she said.
