CANTON, Mass. – Sika Sarnafil, a manufacturer of thermoplastic roofing and waterproofing membranes, announced that Stanley Graveline, Vice President, Technical Services, has received the William C. Cullen Award from ASTM International in recognition of his long-time outstanding contributions to the field of roofing and waterproofing.
ASTM International, formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), is recognized in the development and delivery of international voluntary consensus standards. Today, some 12,000 ASTM standards are used around the world to improve product quality, enhance safety, facilitate market access and trade, and build consumer confidence. The organization’s 30,000 members include the world’s top technical experts and business professionals representing 135 countries.
“William C. (Bill) Cullen was a remarkable man, renowned for both his technical skills in the laboratory supporting new technologies and techniques, and for his practical talents in transferring the results of his research into common practice,” said Walt Rossiter, Chairman, ASTM Subcommittee D08.92 on Awards and Honors.
“Most importantly, he willingly and professionally shared his skills and knowledge with those who sought his advice. As a consequence, Bill ranks among ASTM Technical Committee D08’s most acknowledged and respected leaders, having diligently served from the early1960s through the late-90s. D08 confers the William C. Cullen Award to recognize individuals who contribute to the betterment of the roofing and waterproofing industry in the spirit of Bill Cullen. The 2011 recipient, Stan Graveline, has given to the industry in this spirit.”
“I consider the William C. Cullen Award to be one of the highest honors in the North American roofing industry and I am deeply honored,” Graveline said. “To be recognized by this distinguished organization and to be placed among such a prestigious group of past winners is a great privilege. The collective body of work of the previous winners of the award epitomizes what ASTM is all about and why it is so important: advancing technology, working to the betterment of materials and systems, and most importantly insuring the dissemination of this information here and around the world.”
The award recognizes Graveline’s 25 years of work in the roofing industry in various technical, sales and management capacities in Canada, Switzerland and the U.S. Through his various positions at Sika Sarnafil, he has established himself as a widely recognized expert in the area of thermoplastic single-ply roofing and waterproofing.
In addition, he was a champion of sustainable roofing well before it became popular. He helped build the sustainability platform for Sika Sarnafil and has been asked to lead or participate in the establishment of roofing sustainability guides and standards. More recently, he has become an industry expert in solar and how it interfaces with roofing.
“Stan has stepped forward to provide sound guidance on sustainable roofing not only to his own company, but to that segment of the industry served by a host of flexible single-ply membrane manufacturers. I feel that Bill Cullen would loudly cheer Stan’s eager support of some of these novel concepts that have found their way into the industry,” added Rossiter.
As it relates to single-ply roofing, Graveline has been involved in virtually all types of roof construction and building types and with some of the most high profile projects in North America. His thumbprint is on projects such as the Sky Dome (now known as the Rogers Centre) in Toronto, the first retractable roof in North America. He also helped build one of the largest and best field technical service organizations in the industry.
Finally, he is widely published in the roofing community, addressing subjects that have considerable importance to the industry such as sustainability, recycling, durability, environmental responsibility and wind resistance.
