There is a term called Keys Disease that describes the infectious virus that tempts every visitor to the Florida Keys to stay far longer than originally intended. Oncecasse28 you visit, you’ll know what that means, as do the owners of this newly built 18,000-square-foot home.

Located on a private key in Marathon, Fla., this custom built home was designed with every detail in mind. The house was completed featuring mechanically-seamed metal panels on the steep-slope roof and a modified bitumen system in a complementary color on the low-slope roof. OnShore Roofing Specialist Inc. located in Stuart, Fla., was hired as the roofing contractor to manage this critical project. Their experience with residential projects this large in scope, as well as their first-hand knowledge of the very hot and sometimes windy climate, made them the ideal choice for the job.

The steep-slope roof specification called for a metal roofing system. OnShore Roofing used Polyglass’® Polystick® MTS underlayment, which is a water resistant barrier and features a polyolefinic film surface treated to provide slip-resistance. This membrane is also specially formulated to withstand the high heat environment generated by metal roofing systems (resistant to 265°F) and provides exceptional tensile strength and thermal stability. Polystick MTS underlayment is manufactured using patented ADESO® Dual-Compound Self-Adhesive technology, whereby a “true” polymer modified asphalt compound is applied on the top layer and an aggressive self-adhesive compound is applied on the bottom layer.

The low-slope system consisted of a multi-ply system with Polyglass’ SBS and APP modified bitumen roof system. OnShore Roofing applied two layers of the Elastoflex® SA V, self-adhered elastomeric base ply roofing products manufactured using patented ADESO® Dual-Compound Self-Adhesive technology. Elastoflex SA V membranes are built with a high performance reinforced fiberglass mat to guarantee excellent dimensional stability. To complete the system, OnShore chose Polyglass’ granulated cap sheet Polyflex® SA P in red blend. The color matched the metal roof beautifully. Polyflex SA P membranes are built with a high performance reinforced polyester mat to guarantee excellent dimensional stability. In addition Polyflex SA P features patented FASTLap® for granule free roll ends, as well as SEALLap®, a factory-applied adhesive treatment at the membrane overlap. Each of these patented features provide for greater ease of application, as well as improved product performance.

The vast roof system on this one-of-a-kind home was installed by the talented crews of OnShore Roofing in one month’s time — no easy task with the danger of Keys Disease.
