The Health Services Building complex was a design build project with a focused mission of incorporating sustainable features wherever possible. A major goal in the construction of this building was to earn the prestigious LEED Silver Certification. Including building materials that are “low emitting materials” is a major part of sustainable features and in turn earns the coveted points needed for the LEED certification. Adhesives, sealants, paints, coatings and building materials that are low in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) fall into this sustainable features category. The inclusion of low-VOC building materials increases the quality of indoor air as well as eliminating the release of harmful vapors into the atmosphere.
The high demand for environmentally green products throughout the construction of this building positioned Royal Adhesives & Sealants to provide an excellent solution for the roof system. The company had to provide an adhesive that was environmentally responsible and also met the engineering specifications. Royal’s Millennium One-Step Green® Foamable Adhesive was specified as the insulation board adhesive because of its high-performance adhesive strength, long-term durability and classification as an environmentally green adhesive. Using this adhesive added additional credit toward gaining LEED Silver Certification on this project.
This adhesive is an essentially VOC-free, all-weather insulation adhesive, manufactured with an industry-leading 45 percent rapidly renewable material content. This adhesive carries all of the equivalent FM approvals of Royal’s contractor preferred One-Step™ Foamable Adhesive. The product is designed for use in the company’s patented One-Step process and eliminates error due to off-ratio mixing and pump failures. Application is quick and easy, resulting in significant labor savings for the contractor.
During the installation process, Millennium One-Step Green Foamable Adhesive performed exceptionally well in the cool temperatures, and the quick foaming action enabled the roofing crew to install the insulation board at an accelerated pace. Two layers of insulation board were adhered to the concrete deck using the adhesive. In some areas of the roof there were additional layers installed to provide a tapered roof feature that would ensure that no standing water remained on the roof surface. The adhesive was dispensed using a durable Millennium One-Step™ Battery Powered Applicator.
