The team at Advanced Roofing and Sheet Metal is mourning the loss of one of their veteran crewmembers following a lightning strike while on the job. Salomon Garcia-Martinez, 29, was killed while on the roof of an ongoing project in Bonita Springs on July 25.

First responders told local media that it appeared Garcia-Martinez was gathering his equipment and preparing to take shelter from an oncoming storm when he was struck by lightning. Paramedics worked on him for nearly 30 minutes on the scene but could not revive him, according to published reports. No other injuries were reported.

Company officials described Garcia-Martinez as a loyal and dedicated employee that did excellent work during his eight years with Advanced Roofing and Sheet Metal. The Ft. Myers-based company established a GoFundMe.com page and memorial fund in his honor with a goal of raising $15,000. Garcia-Martinez is a Mexican national survived by a 7-year-old son, a brother and his mother.

“We are hoping our community will help this family in need,” company officials wrote on the latest update on the fundraiser website. “This young man was taken way too soon. God has a plan for this angel and as he earns his wings, we are hoping everyone will help him fly to reach his destination.”

Representatives with DeAngelis Diamond Construction, the general contractor overseeing the project, indicated that they’re cooperating with the investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, but declined further comment.
