Roofing Contractors in New Mexico are being hailed as heroes today for taking action to save a baby and another small child from a burning building over the weekend.
KOAT-TV Channel 7 in Albuquerque reported that roofing contractors working on a building next to the Courtyard Apartments on the city’s northwest side sprang into action upon seeing children in trouble on the second story as smoke and flames began to envelope the structure.
Brothers Mason Fierro and Jermaine Gallien said they saw a man screaming for help from the second story window, and they didn’t hesitate.
We saw him hanging out of the window with his baby, his two month old baby,” Fierro told KOAT-TV. The Roofing crew ran over and tried to set a ladder, but with every precious second passing, Mason called for the man to drop the children.
The dramatic moments were caught on video by a witness standing across the parking lot.
“He dropped her. I caught her. Then they bring out another little boy, two or three years old, then we caught him as well,” Fierro said. “We had each other's back, and it was just an all-in thing.”
Both children were fine, and their parents escaped the fire as well with the help of the roofing crew, who also went door-to-door notifying residents about the fire until firefighters arrived.
