PORTLAND, Ore. — Malarkey Roofing Products, a leader in sustainable, performance roofing shingles and member of the Holcim Building Envelope, has acquired a fiberglass mat manufacturing facility in Williamsport, Md.
“Fiberglass mat is a primary component in the production of asphalt roofing shingles," said Dale Rushing, president. "The acquisition of this facility not only expands Malarkey’s fiberglass mat production capabilities to better serve our customers, it also improves the vertical integration of our raw material supply to accelerate the growth of the company. We look forward to adding roughly 50 employees to our team as we begin operations and become an active part of the Williamsport and greater Hagerstown communities.”
Malarkey currently produces fiberglass mat at the company’s Portland, Ore., facility. Increased product and raw material demand initiated the company’s need to build additional capacity in its operations for fiberglass mat production. With the experience and efficiencies developed on the Portland line, Malarkey intends to start production at the new facility later this year. The new facility also has the capability to produce coated glass facer, utilized for premium Polyiso (mold resistant and high-density) boards.
As the foundation of each shingle, fiberglass mat is then saturated with Malarkey’s patented NEX® Polymer Modified (Rubberized) Asphalt technology, which is made with virgin rubber polymers, and recycled rubber and plastic polymers. This combination helps increase the shingles tear strength beyond the industry standard. The strengthened and rubberized asphalt core of the shingle provides superior all-weather resilience and longer product life, all while reducing landfill waste.
GlassTech Materials, an affiliate company of Maryland Paper Company, sold the facility.
