CertainTeed, a leading North American manufacturer of sustainable building materials, has announced that several of its residential roofing products have achieved GreenCircle Certification for Recycled Content for the second year in a row.
Recognized by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), the GreenCircle Certification is one of the most esteemed environmental verifications an organization can earn. Through a thorough assessment process, GreenCircle Certification ensures certified organizations are implementing comprehensive and effective sustainability practices. The organization verified that CertainTeed’s manufacturing facilities in Fremont, Calif., Jonesburg, Mont., Portland, Ore. and Shakopee, Minn. used raw material containing high levels of pre-consumer recycled across various product lines, limiting substantial amounts of waste during the product development process.
“Contractors and homeowners are seeking more sustainably-made products for their projects that don’t sacrifice durability and longevity of homes,” said Amanda Boyer, product manager, CertainTeed residential roofing products group. “CertainTeed continues to evolve and invest in environmental initiatives that support its overall mission of producing products designed to work together to reduce waste and provide long-lasting solutions. Utilizing recycled content to create and expand our industry-leading roofing portfolio, allows us to create a more circular economy and commit to minimize our environmental footprint, all while building forever homes.”
This certification increases the transparency of CertainTeed’s goals, making it easier for consumers to understand the initiatives the company is taking to maximize growth as a sustainable brand. Some findings from the GreenCircle Certification evaluation period of October 2021 - September 2022 include:
- Products made at the Portland facility increased its total recycled content to 14%, up from 11% in the 2022 evaluation period.
- The Shakopee plant utilizes up to 25% total recycled content during its manufacturing process.
- The Jonesburg facility uses 224,509.98 tons of recycled content and the facility in Fremont purchased 19,056.00 tons of total recycled content to create residential roofing products.
To meet the demand for these products, the company expanded the regional availability of Landmark Solaris® AR and Landmark® ClimateFlex®. Additionally, CertainTeed launched Solstice® residential solar solutions that integrate with any asphalt shingles.
CertainTeed makes all product information and documentation accessible for buyers through its Ecomedes-powered site, a tool to obtain product performance and sustainability information including ecolabel certifications, rating system contributions, recycled content and reusability, and more. Additionally, through programs like Ashpaltica®, CertainTeed encourages contractors and homeowners to recycle old roof systems at the end of their lifecycle that can be utilized for projects in various industries.
