Philadelphia is set to receive a $1.3M federal grant from the Department of Energy to boost energy efficiency, including cool roof tests in areas most prone to the urban heat island effect.

GAF Energy plans to build a state-of-the-art solar roofing testing facility in collaboration with Sandia National Laboratories — with support from the U.S. Department of Energy — to enhance understanding of solar shingles' benefits for heating and air conditioning efficiency.
