The Cool Roof Rating Council maintains a rating program for reporting the radiative properties of roof surfaces. The council publishes solar reflectance and thermal emittance values on its Web-based Rated Products Directory. The radiative properties are measured by independent, third-party testing laboratories. The CRRC does not determine what is "cool" or set minimum requirements. Any roof product may be listed on the CRRC directory with its respective measured values when tested in accordance with CRRC-1. Cool roof products have been around for years, but because of the educational and research efforts of organizations such as the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR® Reflective Roof Products program, combined with the incorporation of cool roofs into certification programs like LEED and California's Title 24, the market has expanded significantly.
