Rick Damato, the inaugural editor of Roofing Contractor magazine, who announced his retirement earlier this year, concluded his distinguished career with a tribute from RC Publisher Jill Bloom at last month’s Best of Success conference in Fort Myers, Fla.
Damato started his roofing career in 1974, gaining industry knowledge through various roles. In the early 1980s, he began writing about roofing equipment for Roofer Magazine, the forerunner of Roofing Contractor. His expertise and commitment to excellence quickly established him as a trusted voice in the roofing community.
Bloom expressed profound personal and professional gratitude for Damato's unwavering dedication during a special moment at the 20th BOS when she presented her long-time partner with a hand-blown glass sculpture interwoven with copper. Damato is also an artisan who works with both mediums.
"For 50 years, Rick has been more than just a part of Roofing Contractor — he's been its heart and soul," Bloom said. "His unwavering dedication, authenticity, and wisdom have shaped not only this magazine but the roofing industry as a whole."
Damato was instrumental in launching Roofing Supply Pro, a vision underscoring his forward-thinking approach and commitment to addressing the evolving needs of the roofing supply sector. His passion for the industry and ability to connect with people have left an indelible mark on colleagues and readers alike.
Bloom also highlighted Damato's particular impact on her, saying, "On a personal level, Rick has been a cornerstone in my career. Over the past 25 years, he has been there for me every step of the way." She praised his ability to remain calm in challenging moments and constant guidance and encouragement.
Stepping into retirement, Damato said he plans to continue his involvement with industry organizations such as the National Roofing Contractors Association, supporting initiatives like Roofing Day in Washington, D.C., and remaining active with the Roofing Alliance and the National Slate Association.
His ongoing commitment to volunteerism reflects his enduring dedication to the roofing community.
Reflecting on this next phase of life, Damato shared insights into his decision-making process: "I have been thinking about this moment for a very long time, so I find myself comfortable in it."
In honor of his retirement, RC also produced a tribute video celebrating Damato's career and contributions to the industry.
As the industry reflects on Damato's remarkable career, his sign-off of "So long, y’all!" resonates and reminds his long-time fans of his legacy: dedication, authenticity, and wisdom.
