Greg Bolt, president of 10X Roofing, has been through it all, from joining his family’s roofing company to growing that company until it was acquired. It can be a tough and exhausting journey, which is what inspired Bolt to want to help others.
“I want to help the guys like that were like me, that are like me, that are growing and scaling by trying to do it in trial and error, versus putting the plan together and executing it,” Bolt said.
In this episode of the Best of Success Podcast Show, Bolt shares his journey, what he has learned over the years and how other contractors can take those lessons and run with them.
Bolt began his journey at a residential roofing company started by his uncle in the 1950s, where his father helped turn the business into a $3 million company. In 1985, Bolt graduated from college with a business degree, expecting to find a job elsewhere, when his dad told him, “Like hell you are, you’re going to work for me.”
“I did, and we were obviously a small family business, and after about 10 years I got the hunger to become an organization,” he said.
Fast forward to 2005 and the business was still around the $3 million mark until a consultant offered their services, fueling Bolt’s dream of turning the small company into a larger one a reality, though the story doesn’t end there.
Bolt speaks about the process of being approached by the largest commercial contractor in the nation to acquire the business, and how that lit a fire under him to grow his family’s company into a $20 million business by 2019.
“It was hard for me to get out of working in the business instead of on the business, and so that's what I did. I moved up into the coach's booth, up on the football field, and I started looking down on the field and seeing what was going on,” he said. “As I did that, we just immediately became more profitable.”
